Summary
Hester Prynne gives birth to an illegitimate child, but she refuses to mention the identity of the father. This means she has to be punished. She has to stand on a platform of the pillory for three hours. Then she has to wear for the rest of her life a scarlet Letter A, for adultery on her bosom as a mark of shame.
